Vermont State Police say they are investigating the death of a man shot and killed Wednesday afternoon by a state trooper in Orange. 

Few details related to the shooting were immediately available late Wednesday afternoon, including the identity of the man who was killed. 

State police said in a press release that the shooting took place around 1:25 p.m. outside a home on Spencer Road, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The trooper was not injured, but was taken to the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin for evaluation, according to the release. 

Police said the investigation was in its “earliest stages,” with detectives at the scene and the Crime Scene Search Team on its way. 

The body of the deceased man will be taken to the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of his death, as well as to assist in determining his identity, according to the release.

“Following standard protocol,” the release added, “the state police will release the name of the trooper who fired his weapon the day after the shooting.”
