GRANTHAM — A box truck that crashed into the guardrail when it attempted to avoid an animal on Interstate 89 in Grantham early Wednesday morning temporarily shut down the highway but the driver of the vehicle was not injured, New Hampshire State Police said in a news release.

The box truck was traveling north on I-89 at around 3:18 a.m. when it approached a curve and swerved to avoid striking an animal in the road. As a result, the truck struck and damaged the right-hand guardrail for approximately 100 feet before it came rest down the embankment, according to police.

The operator of the vehicle was evaluated at the scene by Grantham Fire and Rescue and determined to be uninjured, police said.

Both of the northbound lanes of I-89 were temporarily shut down but the right lane remained closed for an “extended period of time” in order to extricate the truck from the embankment.

In addition to Grantham Fire and Rescue, New Hampshire State Police Troop D was assisted at the scene by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation and Patten’s Auto & Truck Works towing service from Croydon.
