Brush fire at Moody Park in Claremont considered 'suspicious'

CLAREMONT — Fire officials say a small brush fire at Moody Park Tuesday evening that was quickly contained and extinguished is considered suspicious.

Investigator Lt. William Hardy of the Claremont Fire Department said Wednesday while officials are not positive the fire was intentionally set, there is nothing, such as a discarded cigarette, to indicate otherwise.

“There should not have been a fire there for any reason,” Hardy said.

The fire was called in just before 9:30 p.m. (The park closes at 8 p.m. on weekdays after Labor Day.)

Upon arrival, crews located a small area of brush and grass burning just inside the park’s main gate off Maple Avenue and quickly extinguished it, Hardy said in a news release.

Earlier this year, there were a string of suspicious fires around the city, including at the closed Wheelabrator plant on Grissom Lane, the grandstands at Barnes Park off North Street and structures on Hanover Street, River Road and High Street. No one has been charged.

Tuesday’s blaze at Moody Park is the first suspicious fire in a few months, Hardy said.

The fire is being investigated by the Claremont Fire Department, Claremont Police Department and the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands.
