LEBANON — A man who was out on bail after being charged with failure to register as a sex offender faces multiple assault charges after police alleged he attacked two other residents of the city’s seasonal homeless shelter.
Shawn Mooney, 37, most recently of Canaan, struck one man in the head with a hammer and a second man received facial injuries when Mooney allegedly assaulted them outside the Lebanon Emergency Winter Shelter on Sunday afternoon, according to Lebanon police.
Emergency medical responders treated the victims at the scene, and one was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center for further care.
All three men had been residing at the Mechanic Street shelter, according to police.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers encountered a crowd of people gathered in front of the shelter and were told that a physical altercation had taken place between three men.
Officers located two of the people involved behind the shelter, where Mooney was found holding a hammer. An officer ordered Mooney to drop the hammer at gunpoint, and he was taken into custody without further incident, according to police.
At the time of Sunday’s attack, Mooney was out on bail on a charge of failure to register as a sex offender, police said.
Mooney has been charged with multiple felonies and misdemeanors, including second-degree assault, simple assault, being a felon in possession of dangerous weapon, breach of bail, disorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia.
