CLAREMONT — The cause of a Myrtle Street house fire, which left the home uninhabitable, is under investigation, the city’s fire chief said.

The two-story house at 86 Myrtle St. “sustained heavy damage” in the Tuesday afternoon blaze, Claremont Fire Chief Jim Chamberlain said in a phone interview Wednesday.

He declined to provide further details.

“The fire is being investigated by the Claremont Police Department and the state fire marshal,” Chamberlain said, adding that more information would be forthcoming.

Messages left for the Claremont Police and the state fire marshal’s office were not returned by deadline.

Claremont firefighters received a call at 3:17 p.m., according to a news release from Chamberlain. When they arrived, they found “heavy fire” throughout the two-story home. It was deemed under control by 4:06 p.m.

While battling the fire, a Claremont firefighter became disoriented, according to the release. A mayday call was issued for the firefighter, who was in the home’s basement.

“Thanks to the quick and coordinated efforts of on-scene personnel, the firefighter was promptly located, and the mayday was successfully terminated,” Chamberlain wrote in the release.

The firefighter did not suffer any injuries.

Golden Cross Ambulance, the Claremont Police Department, and the Newport and Windsor fire departments also responded to the fire. The Unity and Ascutney fire departments provided station coverage.
