CLAREMONT — City schools were put on shelter-in-place status early Tuesday afternoon when a 20-year-old Claremont man allegedly fired a gun at a 51-year-old man in an incident that was sparked by a road rage incident, according to police.

Jeremiah Schofield was charged with attempted first degree assault and reckless conduct with a deadly weapon after he drew a gun and fired a single round “in the direction” of the unidentified older man, who had confronted Schofield in a parking lot near the Cumberland Farms convenience store on Pleasant Street, Claremont Police said in a news release later Tuesday evening.

The confrontation was the “end result of a road rage incident,” police said.

Clarmont Middle School, Sugar River Valley Regional Tech Center, Bluff Elementary School and Steven High School all went under shelter-in-place orders, Claremont School District said in a social media post.

The shelter order was lifted as soon as officers determined that the scene was safe and there was no further threat to the public, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Richard Bell at 603-542-7010 or the Claremont Police anonymous tip line at 603-542-7026.
