ENFIELD — The Enfield Planning Board unanimously approved a proposal for a new coffee shop in downtown Enfield last week.
Thomas Morrill, an Enfield resident who serves as pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Lebanon, asked the Planning Board for a minor site plan approval to operate a coffee shop at 64 Main St.
“That sounds like a well-needed business here in our downtown area,” Planning Board Chairman David Fracht said at the start of a roughly 20-minute hearing last Wednesday.
After the hearing, where Planning Board members asked a few questions about outdoor lighting and snow removal, the board unanimously approved Morrill’s application.
One of his goals in opening the coffee shop is to provide a place for community members to gather, Morrill said. The name — Carpenter’s Cup Coffee — is inspired in part by the hardware stores that used to be located downtown, Morrill’s own job as a carpenter and Jesus, who was a carpenter.
In his Planning Board application, Morrill wrote that the “anticipated hours” of operation are 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with an estimated 10 to 50 customers per hour. During the hearing, Morrill said there was a chance the coffee shop would host evening events.
Planning Board member Linda Jones asked if Morrill planned on offering any food. He said the coffee shop would likely offered baked goods and possibly panini sandwiches.
“At this point, (I’m) still working out the full range of the menu,” he said.
