HANOVER — In what he called a “bittersweet announcement,” Town Manager Alex Torpey revealed Wednesday that he will leave his position at the end of the month, one year before the end of his three-year contract.

Planning, zoning, and codes director Rob Houseman will serve as the interim town manager beginning August 1, Torpey said in an announcement that he posted on the Hanover town website late Wednesday afternoon.

Torpey, 37, took the helm in 2022 after the departure of Julia Griffin, who had served as Hanover’s town manager for 25 years.

In a 2022 interview, Torpey said that he didn’t intend to match the length of Griffin’s tenure, noting that “25 years was not part of the deal,” and that he was more likely to stay in the role for somewhere between three and 10 years.

“It’s been an honor to serve the Town of Hanover. Although I’m excited about my next steps, I will miss the wonderful and engaging people with whom I’ve had the opportunity to work. We accomplished a lot in the last two years, and in large part that was due to our dedicated Town employees,” Torpey stated.

Torpey added that he plans to continue to live and work in the Upper Valley.

The selectboard will begin a search for a new town manager in the coming weeks, Torpey said.
