Haverhill — Town officials have selected a 12-year veteran of the Haverhill Police Department to lead its force as chief starting Sept. 1.

Brandon Alling, 33, will replace Byron Charles, who retired late last month.

Town Manager Jo Lacaillade said the town opened the position to in-house candidates first, as it routinely does. Alling was the only one to apply, but he fit all of the qualifications for the job and was unanimously recommended by a committe comprising area law enforcement leaders, including Grafton County Sheriff Doug Dutile and New Hampshire State Police Sgt. Victor Muzzey.

Lacaillade formally appointed Alling earlier this week after receiving the OK from the Selectboard.

Haverhill Police Sgt. Wally Trott has been the acting chief in the interim. He is set to retire at the end of this month.
