Local roundup: Hanover wins third straight boys Alpine skiing state crown

BENNINGTON, N.H. — The Hanover High boys Alpine skiing team successfully defended its NHIAA Division II state title, winning its third straight crown on Monday at Crotched Mountain.

In the slalom event, senior Owen Smith finished second in 1:10.5, with junior Nick Reiss in third (1:10.8), senior Ethan Munson fourth (1:12.8) and junior Adam Goodney sixth (1:17.9).

Munson finished won the giant slalom with a combined time of 1:06.6. Smith finished in third (1.07.3), with sophomore Andrew McGuire fourth (1:07.5), Reiss fifth (1:07.7), sophomore Gavin Munson sixth (1:07.9) and Goodney 10th (1:10.6).

All of the above performers qualified for the Meet of Champions, which takes place Feb. 23 at Cannon Mountain.

As a team, the Bears finished with 780 points, winning both the slalom (389) and GS (391). Kennett finished a distant second with 716 points, followed by Bow in third with 712. ConVal and Souhegan rounded out the top five.

BOYS BASKETBALL Hartford 69, Windsor 60

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hurricanes outscored the Yellowjackets, 20-11, in the fourth quarter to break a 49-49 tie and win their sixth straight game.

Five players hit double figures for Hartford, led by junior guards Sean Dunton and Brady Olmstead with 14 points each. Fellow juniors Brody Tyburski and Brayden Trombly each added 12, and junior guard Christian Hathorn chipped in with 11.

For Windsor, senior guard Maison Fortin had a game-high 28 points, junior guard Corey Lockwood added 15 and senior forward Rodger Petermann had 10. The Yellowjackets led, 18-10, after a quarter before the Canes fought back to forge a 31-31 tie at halftime.

“Sean Dunton gave us a huge spark tonight off the bench,” Hartford coach Mike Gaudette said. “Both teams played hard, as neither team could ever get into a rhythm.”

Hartford (15-2) is at Springfield on Thursday. Windsor (6-11) travels to Bellows Falls on the same day.

Mid Vermont Christian 76, Grace Christian 25

QUECHEE — The Eagles raced out to a 20-6 lead and did not look back. Senior guard Joel Roberts made 10 3-pointers en route to a 40-point night, and junior guard Abel Goodwin had 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Mid Vermont Christian (15-4) is at Danville on Friday in the regular-season finale.

Rivendell 60, Twin Valley 27

ORFORD — The Raptors won their fourth straight, improving to 11-4.

Rivendell is right back in action Tuesday at home against Green Mountain.

Hazen 74, Thetford 55

HARDWICK, Vt. — The Panthers, playing their sixth of seven straight games on the road, fell to the Wildcats, who they had beaten by three earlier in the season.

Thetford (12-4) is at Lyndon on Wednesday.

Stowe 47, Woodstock 39

WOODSTOCK — The Wasps fell to 4-11 with the loss, which was their fifth straight. Woodstock is at Otter Valley on Thursday.

Poultney 56, Sharon 39

POULTNEY, Vt. — The Phoenix lost their seventh straight game and fell to 2-13. Sharon hosts Arlington on Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL White River Valley 50, Springfield 26

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Junior guard Tanner Drury had 20 points to lead the Wildcats past the Cosmos at Dressel Gym. Senior forward Ella Perreault added 12 points, and sophomore forward Hannah Collins chipped in with eight.

“It was a rough, physical game,” WRV coach Tim Perreault said. “I was happy to get out of there without anyone getting hurt tonight. Very proud of our team for keeping their composure and being good sports.”

The Wildcats (14-4) host Leland & Gray on Wednesday.

Williamstown 47, Mid Vermont Christian 28

WILLIAMSTOWN, Vt. — The Eagles were held to just six points in the first half in Monday’s loss to the Blue Devils.

Sophomore Alyssa Roberts and freshman Lydia Dickey each had six points for MVCS, and eighth grader Rebekah Roberts and senior Sarah Bascom each had five.

The Eagles (4-11) host Twin Valley on Wednesday.

BOYS HOCKEY Hartford 11, Harwood 1

WATERBURY, Vt. — The Hurricanes won their sixth in a row in blowout fashion Monday at the Ice at Washington West.

Senior Joseph Barwood had a hat trick with three assists, and seniors James McReynolds and Ozzie DeFelice and junior Ezra Mock had two goals apiece. Senior Blaine Gour and sophomore Nick Daniels each scored once.

Mock added three assists and Gour and DeFelice each had two, as did sophomore Nolan Morlock and junior Lochlan Park. Sophomore Logan Caffrey had an assist as well.

Hartford (14-3) hosts Burlington on Friday.

U-32 6, Woodstock 5 (OT)

MONTPELIER — The Wasps held a 5-2 lead entering the third period but could not hang on, and the Raiders scored the game-winner with 20 seconds left in overtime.

Juniors Griffin Piconi and Ethan Havill scored two goals each for Woodstock, and senior Graehem McKeon had a goal and an assist. Freshman goaltender Dominic Palazzo made 22 saves.

The Wasps (4-12) host Lyndon on Wednesday.

GIRLS HOCKEY Concord 3, Hanover 2

CONCORD — The Bears scored twice in the second period to take a 2-1 lead, but the Crimson Tide evened the score with four seconds left in that period and scored the game-winner in the third.

Trailing 1-0 after the first, the Bears found an equalizer in the form of sophomore Eleanor Bradley, whose power play goal was assisted by sophomore Rachel Rockmore. Junior Maeve Lee gave Hanover the lead on an assist from freshman Maggie Feng.

Hanover (11-3-2) is at Acton-Boxborough (Mass.) on Wednesday.
