BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — Brody Tyburski scored seven of his 10 points in the fourth quarter as the Hartford High boys basketball team fought back from a six-point deficit to take the lead with a minute to go and hang on for a 43-42 road win against Brattleboro.

"Huge win for our kids over a D1 team," Hurricanes coach Mike Gaudette said. "Down all game and we took the lead in the last minute. After coming off a tough loss (Thursday) night, I am proud of how our kids responded today."

Hartford (10-2) was behind, 34-28, after three but outscored Brattleboro, 15-8, in the final quarter. Brayden Trombly also had 10 as eight different Hurricanes scored.

Hartford is home against Springfield on Monday.  

Woodstock 59, White River Valley 39

SOUTH ROYALTON — The Wasps (4-6) broke open a one-point game after a quarter, scoring 21 points in the second quarter to lead by 10 at halftime en route to a win over the Wildcats (8-4).

"A solid road win for our program today," Woodstock coach Steve Landon said.

Woodstock's Declan McCullough had 16, Alec Smail 12 and Ezra Lockhart nine. The Wasps hit six 3-pointers and made 13 of 25 free throw attempts. Brayden Russ had 16 to lead White River Valley.

Woodstock travels to Windsor on Friday, while WRV plays Long Trail at home on Tuesday.

WINDSOR — Leading by two after three quarters, the Cardinals clamped down defensively in the fourth, holding the Yellowjackets to four points.

Stevens' Mason Ferland had a career high 22 and Hunter LaRocque added 16. Windsor's Maison Fortin scored 28, but was held to two points in the last quarter.

The Cardinals (9-4) are at Mascoma on Monday while Windsor (3-9) welcomes Otter Valley on Wednesday.

Kearsarge 46, Newport 44

NEWPORT — Saturday brought another close defeat that came down to the final possession for the Tigers, who lost their previous two games by one point.

Newport came from 10 down to start the fourth and tied the game, but the last few possessions resulted in turnovers and a missed shot. The Tigers had a chance to tie in their final trip down the court, but lost the ball out of bounds under the basket.

Aaron Fellows had 17 for Newport, Karter Pollari nine and Kayden LeClair, playing on a sore ankle, chipped in with six.

Newport (4-7) is at Sunapee on Wednesday.

ORFORD — The Raptors move to 7-3 and are at White River Valley on Thursday.

SOUTH ROYALTON — Tanner Drury had 16 points to lead the Wildcats past the Wasps in front of a packed gym on Cancer Awareness Day.

Jillian Barry and Ella Perreault added nine apiece for WRV, which held a 32-9 lead at halftime. Norah Harper led Woodstock with seven points.

“Woodstock is coming along, they’ve shown improvements this year,” Wildcats coach Tim Perreault said. “It was a good win.”

WRV (7-3) is at Proctor on Monday. The Wasps (3-9) host Fair Haven on Tuesday.

Thetford 53, Lyndon Institute 38

THETFORD — Madi Mousley had 17 points and Addie Cadwell added 11 as the Panthers improved to 10-3. Thetford will travel to Spaulding on Tuesday.

Mount St. Joseph 39 Mid Vermont Christian 27

RUTLAND, Vt. — The Eagles fell to 4-7 and are home against Proctor on Wednesday.

St. Johnsbury 66, Hartford 20

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. - The VPA Division I Hilltoppers were too much for the Hurricanes, who were held scoreless in the first quarter and scored just two points in the first half.

Charlotte Jasmin had seven for Hartford, followed by Paige Vielleux with six.

Hartford (8-5) is home against Otter Valley on Tuesday.

Conant 55, Stevens 39

CLAREMONT — The undefeated Orioles handed the Cardinals their second loss of the season. Conant beat Stevens the first game of the season in early December by a similar score.

Stevens (11-2) is home against Mondanock on Tuesday.

Boys hockeyHartford 1, Rutland 0

RUTLAND, Vt — After a scoreless first, the Hurricanes broke through Rutland goalie Noah Bruthamesso with a goal by Connor Tierney off a face-off won by Blaine Gour midway through the second.

Bruthamesso stopped 31 shots, and Hartford goalie Davey Bradley had seven saves.

Hartford (9-3) is home against Stowe on Monday.

Hanover 4, Manchester Central 2

WEST LEBANON — The Bears picked up their fourth straight win, improving to 6-5.

Hanover is at defending NHIAA Division I champion Concord on Monday. The Crimson Tide defeated the Bears in last year’s semifinals.

Kennett 4, Lebanon-Stevens-Mount Royal 1

CONWAY, N.H. — Evan George stopped 40 shots and Maddox Castro scored with an assist to Ryan West, but the Raiders fell to 0-10. LSMR visits Laconia-Winnisquam-InterLakes (0-8) on Tuesday.

Girls hockeyKingdom Blades 7, Hartford 2

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. — The Blades avenged a 2-0 loss in December to the Hurricanes, who are now 5-6 and will be home against Burlington-Colchester on Monday. 

Lebanon-Stevens-Kearsarge 9, Kingswood 0

WEST LEBANON — Effie Makris had two goals and an assist and Sara Forman had a goal and two assists as the Raiders (5-4) overwhelmed the Knights (0-10) with four goals during the game’s first two minutes.

Abby Auch and Mackenzie Ray also scored for LSK, which faces arch-rival Hanover (9-2) on Monday.

Woodstock 13 Rutland 1

WOODSTOCK — The Wasps got a hat trick and three assists from Kassidy Haley and two goals and three assists from Isabel Konijnenberg in a rout of winless Rutland.

Hannah Gubbins, Fiona Piconi and Grace Laperle had two goals each for Woodstock, which scored four in the first and third periods and five in the second.

Woodstock (11-2) is at Middlebury Union on Wednesday.

Indoor track

DURHAM, N.H. — The Lebanon girls 4-by-800 meter team of Isabella Hastings, Mary Rainey, Sarah Smith and Moran Kantor finished third among nine teams in the NHIAA Division II relay meet at the University of New Hampshire.

The next best finish for area teams was a fourth place by the Lebanon boys 4-by-100 team of Tanner Ames, Joshua Ball, Nichola Lamontagne and Ryle Isuga, which edged Hanover's fifth-place finish by Aiden Bradley, Nathaniel Solberg, Joaquin Martin and Oliver Greenway by a half second.

Mascoma's 4-by-800 team of Brody Albanese, Carter Nadeau, Trevor Maheu and Gunner Currier took fifth among nine teams. 

Bradley, Solberg, Martin and Lucien Gleiser gave Hanover a sixth place finish in the 4-by-400 and Gleiser, Justin Dickinson, Rex Gleason and Greenway were seventh in the 4-by-800 for the Bears.

Hanover also had a sixth place finish in the girls 4-by-800 with Jacklyn Anderson, Mia Bagnato, Poppy Collins and Eva Simpson.

Vt. State Championship throwing events

ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. — Eleanor Prestridge of White River Valley took second in the shot put at the Division II Vermont State Championship indoor throwing events. Thetford's Jada Rich was fifth in the event.

Other finishes included Hartford's Jordan Davis taking third in the shot put and fifth in the 25-pound weight throw. His teammate, AJ Aldrich, was fourth in the shot put, and Hartford’s Rocco Clough was sixth in the weight throw. Chase Fischer of Oxbow was eighth in the weight throw, and for the girls, Hartford's Rowan Dumont had a fifth place finish in the weight throw.

WrestlingMascoma edges Lebanon

WEST CANAAN — The Royals defeated Lebanon, 39-36, and Manchester Memorial, 48-31, and lost to Spaulding, 40-29.

Against Lebanon, freshman Jacob Stone (126 pounds) and junior Damian Nestle (220) won by pin.

In the Manchester Memorial match, seniors Garrett Giovagnoli (145), Asa Michetti (152), Nolan Rombow (160), juniors Connor Hobbs (170) and Nestle and sophomores Hunter Zarr (120) and Ethan Lewis (182) all won by pinning their opponents in either the first or second round. 

Winners against Spaulding were Nestle and Lewis, both by pin in the first round, and Michetti.

Lebanon dropped matches to Spaulding, 54-22, and Manchester Memorial, 54-30.

For the Raiders, Sawyer Beaulieu (120), Drew Sanchez (160), and Dustin Jarvis (182), picked up wins for Lebanon against both teams with Beaulieu and Sanchez reaching 20 wins for the season.

The match of the day was between Dustin Jarvis and Mascoma’s Lewis, Lebanon coach Chauncey Wood said. It was the third meeting of the foes with each winning once previously. Jarvis picked up the win with a five-point move in the last 30 seconds of the match.

At 138, freshman Aero Buzby of Lebanon and junior Sierra Gianini of Mascoma was a battle of two girls and was a great match with Gianini winning, 7-3.

Cross Country skiingLebanon's Hanna ninth in 5K race

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. — Annalies Hanna placed ninth among 165 skiers in the New Hampshire Nordic Coaches Association 5K class cross country ski race at Waterville Valley.

For the boys, Hanover's Adam Gilbert-Diamond was 23rd in a field of 168, Angelo Goodwin of Lebanon was 27th and teammate Carson Jones 38th. Hanover's Nichola Van Citters finished 40th.

For the Lebanon girls, Sophie Longacre was 29th, Sophia Mladek 35th, and Elizabeth Kourbatski 40th. Margaret Frost of Hanover was 31st and Elsa May of Hanover 41st.

BowlingWindsor edged in Baker final

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — In the Baker Match finals against host Brattleboro, Windsor dropped the first game but won the second in a "bowl off," 59-47, then lost the last game, 200-176.

The second game was tied at 185 and in the ninth frame, Windsor's Alyssa St. Louis bowled a strike and teammate Avery Bean got strikes in the 10th with his first two balls and then a 9-count for the win, said Windsor coach Steve Bly.

Windsor was the third seed in the four-team match after qualifiers and defeated Fair Haven, 2-1, after dropping the first game.

Hartford, the fourth seed, lost to Brattleboro, 2-0, and to Fair Haven, 2-0. Windsor's top qualifiers were Bean (187, 192) and Rose Sherwin (153, 119). Hartford's qualifiers were Connor Fredholm (160, 155), Hailey Rogers (134, 135) and Lyndsey Davis (80, 121).

Hartford, Windsor and White River Valley are in Claremont next Saturday with Fair Haven.

Stevens third at Maple Lanes

CLAREMONT — The Cardinals were seeded second after qualifying rounds but dropped the first round of the Baker matches to Dover, 2-1, losing the first and third games and winning the second. Raymond, the top seed in the three-team match, beat Dover in the Baker finals, 2-1, after losing the first game.

Top qualifiers for Stevens were Jordan Maddox (182, 187), Logan Aiken (156, 193) and Cody Pellerin (170, 174).

DIVINGHanover’s Calderwood breaks his own school record

HANOVER — Sam Calderwood scored a 458, beating his own school record by 20 points during Saturday’s meet at Dartmouth College.

Calderwood and the Bears are back in action Tuesday for a meet at the CCBA in Lebanon, the last regular-season meet before the state championships on Feb. 10.

HANOVER — Eli Weintraub had 14 points, Emily Neily had eight and Hope Duffy and Steven Lan added six each for the Bears, who are 1-2. Hanover host Winnisquam on Monday.
