Local roundup: Windsor girls basketball completes season sweep of Thetford
WINDSOR — Make it eight consecutive wins for the Windsor High girls basketball team.
The Yellowjackets pulled away from Thetford on Tuesday night for a 56-42 victory, snapping the Panthers’ own eight-game winning streak in the process.
Junior Sydney Perry and sophomore Sophia Rockwood had 18 points apiece as Windsor completed the season sweep of Thetford. Perry had 10 in the first quarter alone.
The Yellowjackets were 13-for-21 at the free-throw line, compared to just 7-of-19 for the Panthers. Senior Madi Mousley led the visitors with 14 points.
“They gave our guards a lot of trouble,” Windsor coach Kabray Rockwood said. “We’re happy to be able to weather the storm. When we push the ball in transition, it doesn’t allow teams to set up their pressures. It’s hard to do that if you’re not controlling the glass, but we did a better job on the glass in the second half.”
As for the prospect of a third meeting between the VPA Division III rivals in the postseason, perhaps at Barre Auditorium?
“It sounds like a massive challenge,” Rockwood said. “They’ve got playmakers, and they’re just going to grind. That’s what Thetford does; they bring out the best in us.”
Windsor (11-2) is at Brattleboro on Friday, while Thetford (9-3) hosts Lyndon on Saturday.

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Freshman sensation Charlotte Jasmin had a game-high 26 points to lead the Hurricanes (8-4) in a comeback win over the Cosmos at Hanley Gymnasium.
Jasmin had 13 of her points in the fourth quarter alone to help the Canes turn a 40-36 deficit around. The Canes outpaced Springfield, 19-9, in the fourth to rally for the win.
Maddi Willey added nine points and Avery Mosenthal had six. Hartford is back in action at St. Johnsbury on Saturday.
CONCORD — The Eagles ventured into New Hampshire and came away with a strong road win.
Alyssa Roberts led the way offensively with 12 points for MVCS (3-6). Rebekah Roberts added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Natalie Bokinala chipped in eight points.
The Eagles visit Twin Valley on Thursday.
NORTH CONWAY, N.H. — The Raiders (1-9) fell to the top team in NHIAA Division II in the unbeaten Eagles (10-0).
Lucy Eshbaugh led Lebanon with seven points. Drew Kantor added four points. Coach Chris Boucher praised the defensive effort of Nina Ellingson.
The Raiders visit Hanover on Friday, with tip-off at 6:30 p.m.
WEST CANAAN — The Royals came up just short in a battle at home against the Bears.
Mascoma scored just 14 points in the first half before the game opened up a bit in the second for both trams. Newfound’s 16 points in the third quarter proved pivotal to take control heading into the fourth.
Freshman Makenna Houston led Mascoma with 15 points. Gabby Pierce added nine points. Kylie Rogers and Leah Larocque each had six points.
Mascoma (3-7) hosts Concord Christian on Friday.
ORFORD — The Raptors fell to 1-11 with the loss to the Terriers.
Ryleigh Butler (12 points) and Mikayla Eastman (six) led the way for Rivendell. The Raptors visit Green Mountain on Friday.
BRADFORD, Vt. — The Olympians (7-5) saw their comeback attempt fall just short against the visiting Rangers.
Oxbow was shut out in the second quarter and trailed, 19-8, at halftime. The Olympians rallied to within six with less than three minutes to play, but couldn’t get any closer.
Emerson Fuller led Oxbow with 12 points and 10 rebounds in her eighth double-double of the season. Braylee Phelps added seven points.
The Olympians visit U-32 on Thursday.
LACONIA, N.H. — The Bears won their third straight, improving to 8-4 overall and 7-2 in NHIAA play. Hanover hosts rival Lebanon on Friday, having defeated the Raiders, 46-18, in the season opener.
HILLSBORO, N.H. — The Cardinals ran their record to 12-1 and travel to Fall Mountain on Wednesday.
CLAREMONT — Stevens opened this one with eight points in the first minute of action and never looked back.
Hunter LaRocque scored 18 points for the Cardinals (8-4, 7-3 NHIAA). Jai-Lique Ribeiro added 11 points. Eleven different players scored for Stevens.
The Cardinals will visit Fall Mountain on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in an effort to try to beat the incoming snowstorm.
CONCORD — The Eagles (10-3) held on for the road win at Trinity.
Carson Meloon had 18 points for MVCS. Joel Roberts added 16, and Abel Goodwin had nine.
“I thought we played well most of the game and moved the ball very well at times on offense,” Eagles coach Erva Barnes said. “Trinity played great in the fourth with 20 points. Their press was good, but we were able to hold and execute to squash their comeback attempt.”
MVCS visits Sharon on Monday.
BRISTOL, N.H. — The Royals (8-3) won their third in a row and host Stevens next Monday.
SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The Yellowjackets (3-8) suffered a tough fourth quarter in squandering a would-be victory at Springfield’s Dressel Gym.
Windsor controlled play in the third quarter, going on a 21-6 charge to build a 48-38 lead. Springfield bounced back with a 17-6 advantage in the fourth to storm all the way back for the win.
Maison Fortin (26 points) and Rodger Petermann (21) led the attack for the Jacks. Windsor will host Stevens on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
LEBANON — The Raiders attempted to use speed and agility to counter the Eagles’ bulk and height. However, turnovers and struggles in the paint, combined with the visitors’ ability to sink late-game free throws, dropped Lebanon to 3-7.
Junior point guard Nick Brill had 14 points for Lebanon, and classmate and forward Talan Patkul added 12 points for the Raiders. Ben Dougherty and Evan Koroski each had 10 points for Kennett (5-4).
Lebanon visits arch-rival Hanover (0-9) on Thursday. The Bears lost the teams’ first meeting by seven points in the season opener.
HANOVER — The Bears, still searching for their first win this season, had a tough fourth quarter in falling to the Sachems.
Hanover used a 17-point third quarter to lead, 44-38, heading into the fourth. Laconia then closed on an 18-8 run to steal the win from the winless hosts.
Ryan McLaughlin had 15 points to pace the Bears. Jaysen Oriol added 11 and Augie Krawitt added eight points. Hanover (0-9) will host rival Lebanon on Thursday night.
