CORNISH — A 70-year-old Ascutney man was seriously injured when a van struck the e-bike he was riding on Route 12A near the Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge on Wednesday evening, Cornish Police Chief Doug Hackett said Thursday.

The preliminary investigation has found that Michael Hamel was riding an e-bike northbound on Route 12A at about 5 p.m. when he signaled a left-hand turn onto the bridge, Hackett said.

At the same time, a van driven by John Webster, 56, of Hartland, traveling eastbound on the bridge stopped at the stop sign before proceeding forward onto 12A, striking Hamel.

Hamel was wearing a helmet at the time, which Hackett said, “did its job,” but Hamel still suffered “serious but non-life-threatening injuries,” including broken bones, in the collision.

Windsor ambulance transported Hamel to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

As of Thursday afternoon, Hamel was in “fair condition” according to a spokesperson for DHMC. A patient’s condition is deemed fair by DHMC if the patient is conscious and their vital signs are stable and within normal limits.

No charges have been filed but the investigation is ongoing, Hackett said.

In addition to Cornish Police and Windsor ambulance, Cornish rescue, New Hampshire State Police and Windsor Police also responded to the collision. Route 12A and Bridge Street in Windsor were close for about 45 minutes during the evening commute, Hackett said.

Hackett urged motorists to be cautious of cyclists as the weather warms.

Route 12A is a “very heavily traveled bicyclist route,” he said. “Share the road.”
