Upper Valley school notes for June 3, 2024

Hanover High School’s quiz bowl team competed at the 2024 High School National Championship Tournament last month in Atlanta. Hanover finished the preliminary rounds with a 4-6 record and were eliminated after they lost to McLean B from Virginia in round 15, according to a news release from National Academic Quiz Tournaments, which organized the national event. The team includes Chris Chor (who served as captain), Nelson Barabas, Ray Menkov and Martin Mosdal. William Murphy is the coach and Chris Helali is the assistant coach. Hanover was one of 320 teams from 38 states, the District of Columbia and China to attend the competition and the only high school from New Hampshire.
Woodsville High School junior Hunter Duval, who participates in Vermont State University Lyndon’s Upward Bound program, has earned the Horatio Alger State Scholar Award and $10,000 scholarship.
Mason Anthony Tucker, of Orange, earned a bachelor’s degree in natural resource conservation and management from Paul Smith’s College, in Paul Smiths, N.Y., this spring.
Madison Hemingway, of Newport, earned a bachelor’s degree in administration of justice from Salve Regina University in Newport, R.I., this spring.
Nathaniel MacIntosh, of Bradford, N.H., earned a bachelor’s degree from Anna Maria College in Paxton, Mass., this spring.
Tamara Kinsman, of Perkinsville, made the president’s list at Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., for the spring 2024 semester.
The following Upper Valley residents made the dean’s list at Lasell University in Newton, Mass., this spring: Alex Taylor, Newport; Emma Tarleton, Woodstock; and Marina Grassi, Wilder.
The following Upper Valley residents made the dean’s list at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., for the spring 2024 semester: Jillian Barry, South Royalton, psychology; and Kalem Boynton, Hartland, sport management.

Christine Downing, who serves as director of curriculum and instruction for three Upper Valley school districts, was honored with the 2024 Outstanding Service Award by the New Hampshire School Administrators Association.
Downing is employed by SAU 32 in Plainfield, SAU 75 in Grantham and SAU 100 in Cornish, according to a news release from the nonprofit organization. Downing was nominated by leaders in all three of those districts who applauded “dedication to educational excellence and leadership in facilitating collaboration during the 306 (“Minimum Standards for Public School Approval”) revision process,” according to the release.
“I am dedicating it to all public school educators throughout our great state: they are the backbone of the high quality educational system New Hampshire has been known for throughout the country,” Downing said in the release. “I have been fortunate to learn from some of the best and will continue to advocate for the importance of our public school system as a vital component of our democratic society.”
