CLAREMONT — First-term incumbent Republican Jon Stone finished third among four candidates for the two seats representing eight Sullivan County towns and the city of Claremont in House District 8.

Incumbent first-term Democrat Hope Damon, of Croydon, had 5,992 votes and Republican Michael Aron, of Acworth, chairman of the Sullivan County Republican Committee, had 5,744 votes. Stone, a former Claremont City Councilor, was third with 5,581 votes followed by Claremont Democrat Codi Raymond with 5,351 votes.

Stone had the third most votes in Claremont (2,412) behind Damon (2,787) and Raymond (2,592) but was behind Aron in seven of the eight smaller towns on the county’s eastern border. Sullivan 8 includes Claremont, Acworth, Croydon, Goshen, Langdon, Lempster, Springfield, Sunapee and Washington.

Stone’s candidacy was drawn into controversy earlier this year when his disciplinary record as a Claremont police officer 18 years ago became public. There were several incidents where Stone threatened violence against his fellow officers and the police chief and his family.
