CLAREMONT — Two newcomers, a Democrat and a Republican, will join a 17th term incumbent in filling the Sullivan House District 6’s three seats in Concord.

John Cloutier, D-Claremont, was re-elected, with newcomers Democrat Dale Girard and Republican Wayne Hemingway to fill the three seats representing Claremont and Croydon.

Three-term incumbent Gary Merchant, D-Claremont, finished fourth among seven candidates in Tuesday’s election.

Girard, Claremont’s mayor, received 2,895 votes followed by Cloutier (2,804), Hemingway, a Claremont city councilor, (2,783) and Merchant (2,639).

Claremont Republicans Emily Sandblade and Robert Merrill had 2,149 and 2,257 votes respectively, with Independent Sean McCarthy, also of Claremont, finishing with 626.

Merchant out-polled Hemingway in Claremont but by only eight votes, 2,481-2,473 and Hemingway won in Croydon by 152 votes, 310-158.

Republican incumbent Walt Stapleton did not seek re-election. Citywide, turnout in Claremont was 86% and there were 810 new voters registered at the polls

In other Sullivan County House races, Brian Sullivan, D-Grantham, defeated Republican Joel Hutchins, 1,565-811, in District 1 (Grantham); First-term Incumbent Democrat William Palmer of Cornish defeated Republican Virginia Drye of Plainfield 1,662-1,102 in District 2, (Cornish, Plainfield); and incumbent Margaret Drye, R-Plainfield, fended off a challenge from Plainfield Democrat Jenny Ramsey, 4.904-4,236 in Sullivan 7 (Charlestown, Cornish, Newport, Plainfield and Unity.)
