HAVERHILL — The Election Law Unit of the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office is serving a subpoena to a Manchester-based printer responsible for a political mailing that went to Haverhill voters, according to a Tuesday news release.

The subpoena is in response to a mailer sent out by an unidentified party that promotes opposition to two warrant articles that will be considered at Haverhill’s Town Meeting, which is scheduled for Saturday. The mailer violates RSA 664:14, which requires that political mailings be signed by the sender. State law allows mailings that do not identify the sender to be removed by municipal maintenance personnel and law enforcement, the release said.   

The Haverhill mailer uses a United States Postal permit from Manchester. The Election Law Unit found that the postal permit belongs to Manchester-based Spectrum Printing, which as of Tuesday morning was refusing to disclose the sender’s identity without a subpoena. 

The release notes that the sender’s identity may not be known before the vote, so voters ought to do their own research on candidates and warrant articles.
