WHITE RIVER JUNCTION – Three new listservs about community topics are launching in the Upper Valley.
Vital Communities, which oversees more than 40 Community Discussion Lists in multiple communities throughout the region, is breaking up its largest listserv – the Upper Valley Listserv – into three separate lists, which will officially launch March 1.
The list events-uv@lists.vitalcommunities.org is designated for one-time and recurring events; goods-uv@lists.vitalcommunities.org is for items for sale, free or those who are searching for particular goods; servicesplus-uv@lists.vitalcommunities.org is for services for sale, wanted or free and all other items that do not fit under the “events” or “goods” list.
Subscribers have until Feb. 27 to state which lists they wish to receive; if they don’t indicate a preference they will automatically be subscribed to all three. More information can be found at vitalcommunities.org/new-uv-lists.
The general Upper Valley listserv regularly has close to 100 postings a day, according to a news release from Vital Communities, a White River Junction-based nonprofit organization. At the time of its creation in 2012, its purpose was to prevent town lists getting multiple posting about events and services from miles away.
“Eleven years later, however, the Upper Valley List no longer serves that purpose as well as it could,” according to the release. “While some people love it just as it is, many find the jumble overwhelming, thus making it hard to present as a good platform for reaching people.”
After surveying dozens of volunteer listserv moderators, Vital Communities staff made the decision to separate the Upper Valley List into three separate ones.
