CHARLESTOWN — A fire early Thursday evening displaced three people in a single family home at 389 Unity Stage Road but caused no injuries.

Charlestown Fire Chief Mark LaFlam said one occupant was home at the time and was able to exit when the smoke detectors activated.

LaFlam said they are not certain of the cause but it appears to be electrical.

When the first crews arrived around 5:30 p.m. there was heavy smoke showing but when firefighters entered the home, LaFlam said there were few flames.

“It pretty much snuffed itself out,” the chief said, adding that the damage was significant enough to displace the owners. “I think it will have to be gutted.”

Crews from Unity, Ascutney, Springfield, Vt., and Rockingham, Vt., responded to the call. Charlestown returned to the station at 9 p.m.
