Local roundup: Hartford boys hockey wins holiday tournament
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hartford High boys hockey team won the 2022 Philippe Bouthillier Holiday Classic, which the Hurricanes hosted at Barwood Arena, with a 5-3 victory Wednesday over Burr & Burton.
Hartford’s goals came from Lochlan Park, Joseph Barwood, Tighe Hrabchak, Jaden Poirier and James McReynolds. Ezra Mock, Blaine Gour and Ozzie DeFelice each recorded two assists, with Hrabchak and Connor Tierney each adding one.
Sean Keliher made 15 saves for the Hurricanes (3-2), who held a 5-1 lead midway through the third period before the Bulldogs scored twice to close the gap.
Hartford hosts Brattleboro next Wednesday.
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Earlier Wednesday, the Wasps defeated the Raiders in the Philippe Bouthillier consolation game.
Woodstock (2-1) is at Burr & Burton next Wednesday, while LSMR (0-4) is at Hollis-Brookline on the same day.
MANCHESTER — The Bears (2-4) closed out the Brian C. Stone Memorial Christmas Tournament with a victory at JFK Coliseum.
Jo Jo Drent had 26 saves for his first high school shutout and was backed by goals from Wyatt Seelig, Jack Wilkinson and Mateo Trimble. Wilkinson, Trevor Lichtenstein and Ryder Wilson each had an assist.

WOODSTOCK — The first highly anticipated rematch of last year’s VPA Division II championship game produced the same result, with the Wasps downing the Hurricanes.
Kassidy Haley opened the scoring for Woodstock within the first three minutes, and Madison Barwood equalized for Hartford later in the first period.
The Canes briefly pulled ahead early in the second on Barwood’s second of three goals, but the Wasps’ Gracelyn Laperle had a quick answer. The teams exchanged goals twice more in the middle stanza before Woodstock created some separation in the third.
Haley had a hat trick for the Wasps and added two assists, while Laperle had one assist to go along with her hat trick. Maggie Mello also scored for Woodstock, and Isabel Konijnenberg had two assists.
Madelyn Durkee and Ada Acker also scored for Hartford, which got assists from Nedra Dwinnell, Morgan Curtis, Zoe Zanleoni and Emma Bazin.
The Wasps (3-1) are at Rice on Friday, while the Hurricanes (3-2) host CVU/Mount Mansfield on Monday.
WEST LEBANON — The Bears improved to 3-1 by defeating the Hornets in the first round of their holiday tournament at Campion Rink.
Rory Seelig led Hanover with two goals and two assists, and Nora Bradley scored twice with one assist. Kali McDonnell and Maggie Feng had a goal apiece, Maeve Lee had three assists and Lucy Braga added one. Feng’s goal was her first at the varsity level.
The Bears will play Vermont’s top team, BFA-St. Albans, in Thursday’s championship game that will feature a matchup of the defending Vermont and New Hampshire state champions. The Comets defeated La Salle Academy of Rhode Island in Wednesday’s other semifinal.
“This was a very nice team win,” Hanover coach John Dodds said. “We were solid in our defensive end, limiting quality Essex scoring opportunities, and we moved the puck well in the offensive zone involving our defensemen.”
CLAREMONT — The host Cardinals outlasted the Yellowjackets to win the inaugural Connecticut River Classic.
Stevens (5-1) led by 11 at the half before Windsor (3-2) stormed back to take a one-point lead after three quarters. Kiley Bundy led the Cards with 13 points, including six free throws in the extra session that helped clinch the victory.
All of the Yellowjackets’ scoring came from Audrey Rupp (18 points), Sydney Perry (12 points, 14 rebounds) and Sophia Rockwood (11 points).
Stevens hosts Kearsarge on Monday, while Windsor hosts White River Valley on Friday.
HANOVER — The Royals (4-2) snapped a two-game skid with the road win over the Bears, who fell to 0-5.
Mascoma is at Inter-Lakes on Tuesday, the same day Hanover hosts Souhegan.
DANVILLE, Vt. — The Wildcats (1-2) edged the Bears for their first win of the season and DJ Craven’s first win as head coach. White River Valley is at Proctor on Tuesday.
WINDSOR — Maison Fortin’s 31 points led the Yellowjackets (3-2) to the Connecticut River Classic title. Fortin, who had 38 the previous day against Fall Mountain, was named tournament MVP.
Jacoby Patterson had 16 points for the Raptors (3-3).
Windsor is at Thetford next Wednesday, while Rivendell hosts Blue Mountain on Tuesday in a rematch of last year’s VPA Division IV semifinal, which the Raptors lost in heartbreaking fashion.
WINDSOR — Senior Devin Genes had 12 points to lead the Cardinals (2-3) past the Wildcats in the Connecticut River Classic consolation game. Stevens used a 17-5 edge in the second quarter to build its lead.
Fellow senior Ty Theriault added 10 points and Jai-Lique Ribeiro chipped in with eight before fouling out late. The Cardinals host Kearsarge on Monday.
LEBANON — Following a 54-6 romp over White Mountains in the first match of the day, the Raiders edged the rival Royals, 38-30.
Against the Spartans, Lebanon had victories from Sawyer Beaulieu (126 pounds), Abigail Stone (132), Cole Ashline (138), Zach Thorton (160), Dustin Jarvis (182) and Chris Kinne (285).
Against Mascoma, Ashline beat the Royals’ Alanna Cilbrith in a back-and-forth match, 18-10 by major decision, thanks to a big third period. Jarvis beat Mascoma’s Ethan Lewis by a 15-2 major decision. Thornton, Beaulieu, Stone, Kinne and Drew Sanchez also won for the Raiders.
Mascoma had wins from Garrett Giovagnolli at 145, Conner Hobbs at 170, Ben Poitras 195, and Damien Nestle at 220. Nestle, a returning state champion, won by pin in seven seconds.
“Our wrestlers have been working hard and getting better every day. We are starting to see the hard work pay off,” Lebanon coach Chauncey Wood said. “It should be a great second half of the season.”
Lebanon faces Newport, Stevens and Campbell next Wednesday in Claremont. Mascoma hosts Newport and Pelham on Jan. 11.
BURLINGTON — The Hurricanes led all 19 boys teams at Wednesday’s meet at UVM, with Thetford, Oxbow and Windsor also in the top five in Division II.
Thetford finished tied for second among D-II squads on the girls’ side, with Hartford tied for eighth, Oxbow 10th and White River Valley 11th.
Hartford’s Bennett Moreno won the boys’ 600-meter run, and fellow Hurricane Jack Fournier-Stephens finished third. Moreno and Fournier-Stephens teamed also helped Hartford win the 4-by-800 relay.
Ayodele Lowe took first for the Hurricanes in the long jump, and Jordan Davis came in second in the triple jump.
