Analysis: Hartford must regroup after reaching the 2022 finals and the 2023 semifinals but graduating many of the players who produced those runs. The Hurricanes have booked a tougher schedule, including clashes with Division I powers Essex, BFA-Fairfax and Rice. “This should help in preparing for the playoffs,” Bebeau said. “I look forward to seeing this year’s group step out of the shadows of a talented graduated class.”
Coach: Dean Cashman (1)
League: NHIAA Division II
Last year: 1-19
Returners: Seniors — Paddy Mooney (F), Tyler Christian (F); Juniors — Keegan Dannehy (D), Nathan Dube (F); Sophomores — Kaelan Clark (F), Ryder Desharnais (D), James Stevens (F), Evan George (G), Logan Mason (G), John Hebert (D), Alexander Koff (F).
Newcomers: Senior — Jack Clary (D); Juniors — Aidan Snow (G), Peyton Sargent (F); Sophomores — Mason Ballard (F), Jayden Montebianchi (D), Benjamin Benes (F), C.J. Gogan (F); Freshmen — Benjamin Fogg (F), Daniel Calderon (D).
Analysis: Mascoma replaces Mount Royal in the program’s co-op but that boosts the program’s combined enrollment and pushes the Raiders up to Division II. Cashman calls it a clean slate and touts nine newcomers but with only three seniors and a tougher schedule, victories could be hard to come by.
Coach: Jon Chamberlain (10)
League: Vermont Division II
Last year: 4-15-1
Returners: Seniors — Griffin Piconi (F), Ethan Havill (F); Juniors — Reid Allegretti (F), Kyle Costales (D), Reece Harriman (F), Trevor Carl (F), Ben Runstein (D); Sophomores — Ian Coates (F), Dominic Palazzo (G), Beck Welch (D),
Newcomers: Sophomore — Mason Greene (F); Freshmen — Marshall Sommerville (F), Ray Petrone (D), Timmy Moore (F), Kelton Maxham (F).
Analysis: The Wasps graduated three players after an uncharacteristically down season. Prior to last winter, Woodstock’s last losing campaign came during the winter of 2016-17. The program followed with state titles in 2018 and 2019. Palazzo is a standout goaltender but the team can’t rely on him as much as last season if it wants to reverse course.
Coach: John Dodds (19)
League: NHIAA Division I
Last year: 16-4-2
Returners: Seniors — Maeve Lee (F), Rory Seelig (F); Juniors — Nora Bradley (F), Hannah Gardner (D), Eleanor Edson (G), Faith Lindsay (D), Julia Lawe (D), Rachel Rockmore (F), J.J. Masland (G); Sophomores: Lucy Braga (D), Heidi Kauffman (F), Maggie Feng (F).
Newcomer: Freshman — Casey Wilkinson (F).
Analysis: “We have a strong core of returning players who were very disappointed with the way our season ended last March,” said Dodds, whose team fell in the semifinals and graduated two seniors. “We have a challenging schedule and only 13 players, so keeping healthy will be important.”
Coach: Kylie Young (4)
League: Vermont Division II
Last year: 12-9
Returners: Juniors — Emma Bazin (F), Madison Barwood (F), Lucy Bloom (F), Morgan Curtis (D); Sophomores — Nella Bowen (G), Flynn Moreno (F), Braelyn Park (D), Aubree Vail (F), Zoe Zanleoni (F); Freshman: Grace Hayes (F/D).
Newcomers: Sophomore — Olyve Frankenfield (F); Freshman — Paisley Danaher (F); Eighth Grade — Vivian Tsouknakis (F), Carsyn Weglarz (D).
Analysis: The excitement of reaching the division finals two seasons ago after years as a doormat has faded for the Hurricanes, who must prove they’re a quality program for the long term. “We are planning for a thin but mighty group this season,” said Young, whose squad graduated six skaters from its first and second lines and a goaltender. “Team goals are bigger than wins and losses and we’ll learn more than Xs and Os.” Hayes, who played varsity last winter as an eighth-grader, and Bazin are Bellows Falls High students who compete via Vermont’s member-to-member program. The Terriers don’t have an ice hockey program.
Coach: Mike Sheehan (5)
League: NHIAA Division I
Last year: 9-8
Returners: Seniors — Phoebe Ballard (D), Lily Hoegler (F), Olivia Pollard (D), Maria Ruas (F), Emily Stevens (F); Junior — Mackenzie Ray (F); Sophomores — Maezie Angles (D/F), Abby Auch (F), Sara Forman (F), Kristen Garzia (G), Andy Lindquist (G), Mirabella Orlen (F), Laura Silveira (F).
Newcomers: Junior — Mia Cahill (F); Sophomores — Georgia Gaffney (F), Gabriella Mayhew (F); Freshmen — Ella Dannehy (D), Kandra Hensley (F), Sofia Lee (D/F), Biff Maher (F), Julia McGee (D).
Analysis: Lebanon lost to Keene in last season’s first round of the playoffs, but is hoping it can take a step up with the return of its most important contributors. “If we can continue to be strong in the defensive zone and become a little more consistent in the offensive zone, we have the ability to do some very good things this season,” Sheehan said. “Two-thirds of our roster is freshmen and sophomores, so we are still a young team.”
Coach: Ian Coates (11)
League: Vermont Division II
Last year: 16-4
Returners: Seniors — Lila Beckwith (F), Hannah Gubbins (D), Grace Laperle (F), Margaret Mello (F), Meridian Bremel, (G); Juniors — Laura Audsley (F), Stella Capurso (F), Elizabeth Tindall (D); Sophomores — Chelsea McDermott (F), Fiona Piconi (D); Freshman — Alexis Audsley (D).
Newcomers: Junior — Eryn McGuire (F); Freshmen — Caroline Adams (F), Lucia Beckwith (F), Adelle Danilchick (F), Ryann Hughes (F), Grace Perrault (F), Pippa Shaw (F); Eighth Grade — Baiah Edmunds (F), Alaythia Lockhart (F), Josephina Palazzo (D).
Analysis: The back-to-back defending state champions have graduated their core, so they need to develop new chemistry. The first two 100-point scorers in program history are both gone — Isabel Konijnenberg to Williams (Mass.) College and Kassidy Haley to prep school. “Scoring will be a little tougher to find this year,” said Coates, whose team graduated three seniors after last season. “The team will have to retool how it approaches games.”
